Different Types of Forklifts and Their Common Uses (WA Worksite Edition)

Types of Forklifts

A forklift truck is most useful machinery for every construction yard, warehouse, or farm. It is a mobile lifting platform to stack & move the loads that humans can’t.

But do you know? Every worksite has its own requirements & tough spots. E.g. uneven ground, narrow aisles, massive loads, weird-shaped materials. That’s why we need different types of forklifts to handle them all.

Choose the wrong one and loads go unbalanced, tyres slide on rough ground, you can’t access high racks. That’s why we prepared this guide to make the task easy for your team. We’ll discuss 10 key types of forklifts common in Aussie worksites.

At Worldwide Construction Machinery (WCM), we are dealing with all kinds of work sites across WA, from dusty mine camps to slick warehouses. We supply the variety of forklifts for sale, each built for specific tasks and environments.

Let’s help you choose a forklift for your work environment, load type & usage demands.

Common Forklift Types & Their Uses

Following are some widely used forklifts in tight indoor warehouses to outdoor construction sites. Let’s see what they are, how they’re built, and where you can use them.

1- Counterbalance Forklift

Counterbalance Forklift

This is the classic electric powered forklift with front forks for lifting, and a heavy counterweight at the rear to balance the load. They have no extending arms or booms and directly move with load.

Specs & characteristics:

  • Available in multiple power sources: battery/electric, LPG, petrol or diesel.
  • Some models come with three wheels (one rear wheel) for better turning and manoeuvrability in tight indoor spaces.
  • Operator can move on and off between loads.

Best uses:

  • Warehouses, factories, loading docks, retail storerooms.
  • General lifting, stacking pallets, loading/unloading trucks or containers.
  • Indoor tasks and smooth surfaces, but some internal combustion versions also work outdoors.

It is popular because it’s simple, versatile, and widely available. At WCM, they are preferred by clients needing reliable daily-use lifts without too much fuss.

2- 4WD / Articulating Forklift

Major forklift trucks with all-wheel (or four-wheel) drive and an articulated (bending) chassis for better manoeuvrability on uneven ground. It can pivot and articulate its mast and forks and move with all wheels in tight spaces, where standard rigid forklifts can’t.

Specs & characteristics:

  • All-wheel drive or 4WD, to give better traction and control.
  • Articulated steering or chassis pivot allows better turning.
  • Pneumatic tyres for grip over rough terrain or tight spaces.

Best uses:

  • Outdoor sites with uneven ground, like farms, construction yards, logging sites, rough terrain.
  • Confined areas of warehouses, manufacturing, and retail.
  • Places where you need stability, manoeuvrability and traction in dirt, gravel or unsealed ground.

If you work in rural, semi-rough surfaces in WA, choose it instead of warehouse forklift.

3- Internal Combustion Forklift

Internal Combustion Forklift

Forklifts powered by internal combustion engines, with petrol, LPG or diesel. This diesel powered forklift have power and flexibility for both indoor and outdoor use. Their solid tyres provide a smooth ride and are puncture-proof since they are not air-filled.

Specs & characteristics:

  • Higher power output compared with electric models for heavy loads.
  • Available with pneumatic tyres (suitable for outdoor use) or cushion tyres (for smoother surfaces).
  • More tough engines for sustained heavy lifting or continuous operation.

Best uses:

  • Indoor & outdoor work sites, loading yards, construction zones.
  • Operations requiring high lift capacity, heavy pallet movement, or long hours.
  • Environments where refuelling is easier than electric charging, like remote job sites or rough terrain.

At WCM, when customers need a forklift on dusty or uneven ground, a diesel or LPG/petrol internal combustion forklift wins.

4- Telehandler / Telescopic Handler Forklift

Telehandler / Telescopic Handler Forklift

A hybrid between a forklift and a crane. It features a telescopic boom with forks (or attachments) at the end for reach and lifting ability of both crane and forklift. It can move diagonally and lift the heavy loads up to a certain height.

Specs & characteristics:

  • Telescopic boom can extend forwards and upwards.
  • 4WD with good ground clearance and tough tyres for outdoor and rough-terrains.
  • Attachments, like buckets, hooks & other tools make it a small crane.

Best uses:

  • Construction and agriculture, shifting loads to greater height or over obstacles.
  • Placing materials onto roofs, lifting hay bales on farms, loading trucks, materials handling in open yards.
  • Access to confined spaces, odd angles and tight areas
  • Outdoor work where terrain is uneven (e.g. building sites, farm works, rural stockyards).

5- Pneumatic Tyre Forklift

A forklift fitted with pneumatic (air-filled) tyres rather than solid or cushion tyres. This gives better shock absorption and traction on outdoor or uneven surfaces.

Specs & characteristics:

  • Pneumatic tyres with deep, rugged treads. Good for gravel, dirt, gravel roads and uneven ground.
  • Durable suspension and often stronger engines to deal with bounce, load shifts and ground irregularities.
  • More stability outdoors compared with cushion-tyre forklifts meant for flat surfaces.

Best uses:

  • Outdoor construction sites, farmyards, timber yards, transport yards.
  • Situations where a warehouse forklift would skid, get stuck or damage tyres.

In WA’s dusty or gravel-filled yards, pneumatic-tyre forklifts work efficiently. Most WCM clients rely on them for daily outdoor duties.

6- Rough Terrain Forklift

Rough Terrain Forklift

Built specifically for outdoor job sites with rough, uneven, and unpredictable ground. E.g. dirt tracks, sand, gravel, construction sites or farms. These forklifts have unmatched power and traction. Their pneumatic off-road tyres give balance and stability on rough ground.

Specs & characteristics:

  • Large pneumatic tyres, deep tread and high ground clearance.
  • Strong engine and reinforced chassis/cab capable of lifting substantial loads over rough ground without tipping or jamming.
  • 4WD for stable traction even on sand, gravel, rock or dirt.

Best uses:

  • Building sites, rural farms, mining support yards, timber or logging yards.
  • Transporting materials where roads are unsealed or rough, and vehicles need stable lifts.
  • Heavy-duty loading/unloading under tough ground conditions.

Many of our WCM clients who run jobs in remote WA areas choose rough terrain forklifts.

7- Industrial Reach Forklift / Reach Truck

What it is: Also called a reach forklift or reach truck — built for warehouses and storage facilities, especially where space is limited and shelving is high.

Specs & characteristics:

  • Long mast and a mechanism (pantograph or extendable carriage) that allows the forks to reach out into racks. This helps in narrow aisles and tall racking systems.
  • Electrically powered for indoor work when fumes are a concern.
  • Designed with stability in mind: outriggers or stabilising systems to handle high lifts safely.

Best uses:

  • Warehouses, distribution centres, logistics hubs with tall racking systems.
  • Indoor storage, retail stockrooms, manufacturing plants needing efficient high-bay storage.
  • Tight aisles where normal forklifts struggle to turn or reach pallet loads.

If your warehouse in Perth needs to store goods high up and make smart use of vertical space, a reach forklift is often the most efficient option.

8- Side Loader Forklift

This forklift carries its load on the side instead of in front. The forks are mounted laterally. A design like this makes it ideal for long, bulky items.

Specs & characteristics:

  • Side-mounted forks and carriage, with operator compartment often aligned to give good visibility front and rear.
  • Some models are multi-directional, capable of rotating or shifting load sideways — useful in tight aisles or narrow spaces.
  • Can be fuel-powered or electric, depending on model and purpose.

Best uses:

  • Transporting long, awkward loads, e.g. timber planks, steel beams, pipes, sheet material.
  • Warehouses or depots storing long items; timber yards, metal fabrication shops.
  • Tight aisles where turning a standard forklift with a long load would be a headache.

In our WCM experience, side loaders come handy for clients dealing with building materials, long metal stocks or timber, especially where storage space is tight.

Selecting the Right Forklift: What to Consider?

When you’re searching a forklift for sale in market (new or used), ask yourself a few questions first. Because you won’t be able to change your decision later.

  • How’s your worksite? Smooth concrete floors, or rough dirt/natural ground?
  • What are you lifting? Pallets, crates, long steel/timber, heavy plant?
  • How high must you lift? Ground level, standard shelf height, or high racks?
  • Indoor or outdoor use? Enclosed warehouse or open construction yard?
  • Fuel / power preference? Electric (clean, quiet) vs diesel/petrol/LPG (powerful).
  • Load frequency and hours worked? Light warehouse shifts or day-long site work.

Then decide for forklifts & equipment needed to augment its function.

Also, if you’re open to used construction equipment, you can get heavy-duty forklifts or specialized types for far less than new. Just make sure to buy from reputable construction machinery suppliers and check maintenance history carefully.
